Planning Tools for Meal Organization

Choosing Your Meal Planning Style

Deciding what meal planning style is for you is all about finding what works best for you.

Personally, I plan our weekly meals in my Everything Planner, the flagship diary of Dear Diary. There is a page for each week to plan meals. I prefer the old-school method of pen and paper.

You might prefer digital convenience, where everything from recipes to grocery lists is at your fingertips.

You can use apps for this (some suggestions are Plan to Eat and Paprika – but I haven’t tried them myself!).

I also sell the Everything Planner as a digital PDF, which you can edit directly on your phone so that you have access to your planning wherever you take your phone.

Keeping a record of your meal plans helps make shopping more efficient and ensures you don’t forget anything important.

I usually take a photo of my meal plan and shopping list and take that along when I go grocery shopping.

The Advantages of Meal Planning

Embracing the planning tools at our disposal can significantly streamline meal prep. It’s not just about saving time; it’s also about reducing stress.

I find that if I don’t meal plan for a week, I’m more overwhelmed and decision fatigue rears up its ugly head quickly.

With everything organised in one place, you can easily keep track of what you need and what you’ve done. This way, meal planning becomes less of a chore and more of a simple step in your routine.

I’ve also found it much easier to make our meals healthier if I meal plan because I take some time to think about how to add whole foods to our meals.

Meal planning can also significantly reduce grocery bills because you’re buying what you know you need and you can reduce food waste.

Balancing Nutrition for Family Health

Shifting the focus towards family health and ensuring everyone at home enjoys a balanced diet can be a game-changer.

Now, I know you’re thinking, “Yes Karin, I know that we should be eating healthy food. But you haven’t met my children!”

Let me assure you that I am very aware of how tricky it can be to prepare a meal that everyone in your family will eat and that still has enough nutrients.

If you have picky eaters in the family, catering for everyone can be hard.

But first, let’s talk about the basics of getting enough nutrients into your family’s meals. Here’s how you can make that happen:

Variety is the Spice of Life

It’s crucial to mix things up when it comes to what you’re serving at the dinner table. By making sure your meals include a good balance of protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and a sprinkle of vitamins and minerals, you’re setting the table for success.

This variety isn’t just about taste; it’s about making sure everyone’s nutritional needs are covered.

Eat the Rainbow

Who doesn’t love a bit of colour on their plate? Adding a spectrum of fruits and veggies not only makes meals more enticing but also ensures that your family gets their fill of essential nutrients and antioxidants.

Think bright berries, leafy greens, and vibrant carrots – these aren’t just pretty to look at but pack a nutritional punch too.

Watch the Not-so-good Stuff

We all know too much sugar, salt, and saturated fats aren’t great for health. Keeping an eye on these can help maintain a healthier diet for your family. It’s all about moderation.

Instead of banning treats entirely, find healthier alternatives that satisfy those cravings without compromising on nutrition.

I have listened to a LOT of podcasts on health and nutrition recently and almost all the experts agree: cutting ultra-processed foods from our diets is one of the best ways to improve our health.

Wholesome Choices

Planning meals around whole grainslean proteins, and plenty of fibre can significantly boost your family’s energy and overall well-being.

These ingredients help keep everyone feeling full and energised throughout the day.

I like to think of where our food comes from. By eating foods as similar to as they are when they occur naturally, we can reduce processed foods and focus on whole foods.

I do want to add that I know that this can be extra work. It’s much easier to buy a finished snack in the grocery store than preparing something from scratch. Often, the processed foods are also much cheaper, which makes the challenge bigger.

Give yourself grace. Don’t beat yourself up about the processed foods your family eats, but make an effort to increase your whole food consumption as much as you can.

Enhancing Taste for Family Enjoyment

Elevate Your Family’s Mealtime

I just want to add here that I find a lot of recipes for our meals on Pinterest. This often takes a lot of time though. Plus, there is always a risk of picking a bad recipe and flopping a dish (which is especially heartbreaking when you’re preparing expensive meat dishes).

If you’re looking for a set of recipes that have been tried and tested, incorporate a lot of plants without being vegetarian or vegan and are budget-friendly, I encourage you to try out my digital recipe book.

I compiled our family’s favourite recipes into one beautiful PDF that you can save to your phone and have access to whenever you want to whip up a meal.

Spicing up your meals can make a world of difference to your family’s dining experience.

It’s not just about adding heat; it’s about exploring the rich flavours herbs and spices bring to the table.

For instance, a dash of cinnamon can add warmth to sweet dishes, while a sprinkle of thyme can give an earthy depth to savoury meals.

I add salt, pepper and Paprika to just about everything we eat and it makes it a thousand times more delicious. Have you tried this?

I also love a good herb mix. The Robertson’s Mixed Herbs is a favourite in our home.

Adding umami for depth is another game-changer. Ingredients like mushrooms, tomatoes, and soy sauce pack a savoury punch that can transform a dish from good to unforgettable.

This isn’t just about making food salty; it’s about layering flavours for a rich, satisfying taste.

I recently tried out Leggings and Lychee’s aubergine and butter bean stew and it was so delicious that I’m already planning on making it again this week.

Cooking Techniques Matter

Have you ever noticed how a roasted vegetable tastes sweeter, or how grilling brings out a smoky flavour in meat?

That’s because cooking methods like roasting, grilling, and braising don’t just cook food; they enhance its flavour. These techniques can add complexity and make your meals more interesting.

Garnishes: The Finishing Touch

Never underestimate the power of a good garnish. A sprinkle of fresh herbs, some citrus zest, or a handful of toasted nuts can dramatically elevate a dish, both in looks and taste.

I also love crumbling some feta over our salads or adding pumpkin seeds.

It’s the final flourish that can make a simple meal look and taste gourmet.

Incorporate These Tips Into Your Weekly Meal Prep

When planning your family’s meals for the week, think about how you can use herbs, spices, and umami-rich ingredients to add flavour.

Consider which cooking techniques will best enhance your ingredients, and don’t forget the garnishes. By focusing on these elements, you can turn everyday meals into something special your family will love.

Variety in Weekly Family Meals

Spicing Up Your Weekly Family Dinners

Keep Dinner Exciting with a World of Flavours

When you’re planning your family’s weekly meals, throwing in a mix of cuisines is a fantastic way to keep everyone at the table interested. Think about it – one night you could be enjoying a creamy Italian pasta, and the next, you’re tucking into some spicy Mexican tacos.

This isn’t just about keeping dinner exciting; it’s also a great way to introduce your family to a range of cultures and flavours.

I’ve found that having a little set of “rules” for meal ideas makes it easier to come up with a meal plan each week.

Here’s an easy example:

Meatless Monday (for plant-based dishes)

Pasta Tuesday (like lasagne, spaghetti bolognaise, pasta salad etc.)

Salad Wednesday (I’m not talking a lettuce, tomato and cucumber salad. The internet is packed with delicious salad recipes that are packed with protein and flavour and texture. Try them out!)

Burger Thursday (mix it up with different patties like beef, chicken, plant-based etc.)

Fish Friday (any seafood dishes)

Soup Saturday

Stew Sunday

Diverse Protein, Happy Meals

It’s all too easy to get stuck in a rut with the same old chicken recipes. That’s why it’s crucial to mix up your protein sources.

By alternating between chicken, beef, fish, and even plant-based options like tofu or beans, you’re not only giving your meals a variety, but you’re also making sure your family gets a broad spectrum of nutrients.

It’s a simple change that can make a big difference in how you enjoy your meals and look after your health.

Cooking Techniques That Transform Your Meals

Ever noticed how the same ingredients can taste completely different depending on how you cook them?

That’s the magic of varying your cooking methods. Grilling can impart a smoky flavour to your food, roasting brings out a natural sweetness, and stir-frying keeps things crisp and vibrant. Experimenting with these techniques means you’ll never get bored of your meals.

The Joy of Discovering New Ingredients

One of the best parts of cooking is the chance to try out new ingredients and recipes. It’s like a little adventure in your kitchen.

You might find a new favourite or learn something interesting about another culture’s cuisine. Plus, it’s a brilliant way to keep mealtime from becoming monotonous.

So next time you’re at the market, why not pick up something you’ve never tried before? It could be the highlight of your dinner table conversation!

Cooking for Picky Eaters

If you have picky eaters in the family, it’s often not necessary to cook entirely different meals for them.

I’ve found that my kids often enjoy the raw versions of the vegetables I’m cooking for us. So, for example, when I cook carrots I’ll leave some raw for the kids to nibble on.

The other day, I made smashed sweet potatoes for my husband and myself. The kids turned up their noses as they walked into the kitchen, so I improvised. I mixed some cooked sweat potatoes with an egg, raw spinach some flour, some spices and some water in our Nutribullet and made little flapjacks in our panini press. The kids devoured them!

Mastering Family Meal Prep Techniques

Streamlining Your Weekly Meal Prep

The efficiency of meal planning increases tenfold if you combine it with meal prep.

Think about planning your meals in advance and embracing the magic of batch cooking.

This isn’t just about throwing ingredients together; it’s about making your life easier. For instance, spending a bit of time on a Sunday prepping ingredients can clear up to 2 hours from your busy week. And who wouldn’t love having dinner almost ready when you walk through the door?

Why Batch Cooking and Slow Cooking Are Game Changers

When you batch cook items like chicken or beef, you’re essentially setting yourself up for success for the entire week. Imagine just having to add a few fresh components for a complete meal – it’s that easy.

Then there’s the slow cooker (I use an Instant Pot), your best friend for reducing the time you actively spend cooking by half. It’s like having a personal chef cooking away while you’re out living your life.

If you cook your protein ahead of time, chop up your vegetables and prepare grains (like bulgar wheat, quinoa, etc.) you have all the finished ingredients to make a lovely salad for lunch each day. Making dressings can also be a game changer (mixing tahini and yoghurt for a salad dressing changed the way I see salad lunches!).

A Little Work After Grocery Shopping

You are much more likely to use the fruits and vegetables that you bought at the grocery store (while feeling optimistic about healthy food choices for the week) if you do a little meal prep as soon as you get home.

For example, clean your vegetables and chop them up. Cut carrots up into sticks (store them in water to help keep them fresh).

Wash and chop spinach and freeze it for smoothies and cooking. If you want to use it fresh in a salad, make sure to keep it dry in the fridge so it doesn’t become mushy.

Wash berries and store them in the fridge so you can grab them and eat straight away.

The Importance of Organisation

Meal prep is not just about cooking in advance, but also about keeping things organised.

Labelling and dating your meals might seem like a small step, but it’s crucial for keeping track of what’s fresh and what needs to be eaten soon. This simple act can dramatically cut down on food waste.

Plus, diving into the world of freezer-friendly recipes opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. These meals can be a lifesaver on hectic days and can stay good for up to three months. It’s all about making your future self thank you.
