When you are pregnant, the number of baby products that you come across can be very overwhelming. It can be difficult to decide which items are essential and which items are “nice-to-have” rather than “must-haves.” I will admit that I bought many items when I was pregnant with my first daughter that I never (or rarely) used.
The Ubuntu Baba Stage 1 Carrier is one of the items that I have not regretted buying. I use it every day with my son (who is my third child). We use it when we go for our family walk, I use it when I have to prepare dinner and he is fussy and I use it every time I go grocery shopping. I love being able to cuddle with my baby while still getting things done around the house!
Having the Ubuntu Baba Baby Carrier has been a gamechanger and I wish I had already bought it in my first pregnancy!

Our Ubuntu Baba Story
I didn’t have an Ubuntu Baba Carrier with my first daughter and I promised myself that I would buy one for our next baby. I had tried a wrap carrier with her and it didn’t work for us at all. It always felt as if she was about to fall out!
When my eldest daughter was almost 2, we found out I was pregnant. Unfortunately, our first scan showed that the baby had not developed and I had a miscarriage. We were heartbroken!
A few weeks after the miscarriage, Ubuntu Baba had a sale. I decided to buy myself the Stage 1 carrier even though I was no longer pregnant. It was a gesture of hope for me. I kept the carrier safely tucked away in the empty room that should have been the nursery.
A few months later, I fell pregnant again and our second daughter was born. I loved using the Ubuntu Baba with her.
At the time of writing this, our third child, a son, is 14 weeks old. I have used the carrier almost daily with him!
What is An Ubuntu Baba?
The Ubuntu Baba is a baby carrier from South Africa, and it’s my number one motherhood essential. It’s not just any baby carrier – it was designed by mothers for mothers in collaboration with experts in the field of ergonomics and safety.
Ubuntu Baba was founded in 2015 by Shannon McLaughlin, a mom herself who couldn’t find a baby carrier that suited her needs. After much trial and error, she came up with the perfect design and many many parents have benefited from this product since then.
Ubuntu’s mission is to provide parents with an ergonomic, comfortable, and safe way of carrying their babies. As a result, their carriers are made from only the finest materials and are produced to the highest standards. The carriers are manufactured in South Africa so you are supporting locals when you purchase one!
Ubuntu Baba also has an array of beautiful designs that are perfect for every parent’s style – my carrier is basically my number one fashion item at the moment. They have a range of prints and colours to choose from so you can find something that fits your taste.
Using an Ubuntu Baba is not only convenient but also provides both parent and baby with many health benefits. With its ergonomic design and lightweight fabric, it helps distribute the weight evenly across your back; reducing strain on your shoulders and neck while providing superior comfort for your little one.
What’s more, it encourages healthy hip development and enhances bonding between parent and child – making it an invaluable tool for moms. Ubuntu Baby Cuddles are the best!
The Ubuntu Baba Stage 1 Baby Carrier
We are currently using the Stage 1 carrier, which is suitable from newborn to 14 months of 12kg’s, whichever comes first. Our babies have all been bigger than average, so I don’t think we will make it to 14 months with the Stage 1.
There is also a Stage 2 for older children, which we don’t own yet but are planning on getting this time around.
The Stage 1 has a privacy hood for sun shelter. Some women use it as a breastfeeding cover but I haven’t managed to feed my babies in the carrier.
The Stage 1 is also approved by IHDI as a hip-healthy ergonomic product for newborns.
It has a large pocket at the front, which is ideal for putting your phone inside on walks or while shopping.
We have the carrier in a grey colour and I love it because it doesn’t show dirt as easily (we live on a farm and dirt comes with the territory!).
